How and when to monetize the blog?

I have always monetized it right away. We have 5 blogs and they all got monetized immediately. However, you wont get much income from it till you get a lot of people visiting your sight to click on the adsense ads.

I agree ... most of my time is advertising (building links).

I tried monetizing mine but it didn't work very well. Actually I made nothing lol
