If anyone is in a straight relationship, it is nigh on impossible to be friends with someone of the other sex, even if you knew them before you met your significant other. One of the tenets of cross gender friendship is attraction (albeit maybe an unconscious one) and that can always lead to trouble.

I believe men and women can become friends. I've had a lot of friends in the past who were girls. Don't get me wrong, occasionally a man and a girl who are just friends might go to the next level but that doesn't always happen. So yeah, I believe that men and women can be JUST friends.

Just that both must be very clear of their feelings, although there may be times where it just seems like the line may be crossed, it is important to remind one another what the friendship is about.
