If you are using Blogger Beta, then you need to Expand widgets before you copy that code and work around with it. Its hihgly likely you didnt do it and thats the reason your code doesnt work properly now.

Another reason is, the old blogger and new blogger beta uses different CSS technique to read and organise blogs. New one uses widgets unlike the old one.
