Sometimes - more often than not actually - if you were friends with someone and then started dating them and then things went bad, you might also lose them as a friend. It's likely better to date someone who you don't already know, for that reason. That way, if the relationship goes south and you part ways, you haven't lost anything that wasn't there before.
