Just curious as to others' experience regarding the length of blogs. I would assume that longer blogs have some difficulty in holding the readers' attention, but I'm finding much longer entries with some frequency as I look at them online. Any thoughts?

It all depends on your writing capabilities. If you can explain well in small blogs in 300-400 words then small is ok or if you can retain your visitor till the end in a long blog post of 900-1000 words then long is ok.
It's up to you to decide the length of the bolg.
I think it really depends on what you're writing.
For me, some things can be less than a 100 words, some can be more than 1,000.
